Having good studying habits is important if you wish to be successful as a college student. One secret to good studying is having the ability to study at the same time each day. However, when should you be studying? Is there a good or bad time of day to study when you are not in class? The answer to that question depends on your own schedule. Generally, those who study in the morning or right before bed get the most out of their study time.
Why Is It A Good Idea To Study In The Morning?
Studies have indicated that we are quite ambitious in the morning. This is because we have just woken up from what should have been a restful sleep. Since this is the time at which we are the most refreshed, our brains are going to take in information a lot better.
The books that you read, the videos that you watch and the notes that you memorize are going to stick in your brain. When you get to class, you will be ready to discuss the material that you were supposed to go over the night before. If you have a test, you will be able to do well without any issues.
If you do study in the morning, make sure that you have eaten breakfast. Those who don’t have time for a full breakfast should at least make time for a quick bagel and glass of orange juice. Having a full stomach allows you to think clearly about something other than food when you are supposed to be studying.
Why Study Just Before Bed?
Studying before bed can be advantageous because it will be the last thing that you do during the day. This means that your brain is going to spend more time processing the material that you have just finished looking over. When you go to sleep, your brain is going to process this information through the dreaming process.
When you wake up, you will find that you remember what you studied quite clearly. If you are going to study late at night, you should make sure to avoid caffeine or alcohol. This can muddle the information storing process that your brain goes through when you sleep. There is a good chance that you won’t remember anything if you are drinking while studying.
If you are going to study right before you go to bed, give yourself at least an hour between the end of your study session and the time that you go to bed. If you don’t do this, your mind may not be relaxed enough to drift into a deep sleep. This can then hinder your ability to retain what you have just learned.
A Cramming Session May Not Always Be A Bad Idea
If you’re thinking about cramming for your test, you should do so a few minutes before the test starts. This is because your mind will tend to remember the last few things that you have seen. Therefore, it never hurts to run through your study guide real quick before class.
Reading your notes before the professor enters the classroom can make up for a lack of studying the night before. If you have taken good notes, you should be able to outline the main points and facts that you will need to know on your test. Remembering the important stuff allows you to muddle through any parts that you may not understand well.
The good news is that many tests in college will only test you on knowledge that you have gained over the past few days or weeks. This means that you only have to remember a certain portion of American history or the astronomy notes that you have taken. This should help you cram before class if you need to.
Remember To Take Frequent Breaks No Matter When You Study
Keep in mind that another key to good studying is taking breaks. Getting up to stretch your legs for a few minutes will allow you to clear your mind while working out any cramps or aches that you may be feeling.
If your study area gets too hot, open a window or turn on a fan to make it cooler. Never hesitate to get up for a snack every so often. If you are hungry, you are only going to be stressed while studying. This could cause you to give up your study session.
Exercise is always a good thing when you are trying to ready your mind for a study session. Spending some time on a treadmill or lifting some weights will keep your mind fresh and allow you to work off any stress that you are feeling.
There is no best time to study for everyone. Some people will want to study in the morning while others will want to study at night. With the crazy schedules that some people have to deal with, it may be impossible to have a set time to study each time. In that case, you simply have to find time to study whenever you can.
