Engineering Degree

There are many career choices for people who have engineering degrees. Most of these jobs require people to have creative skills and expertise in both mathematics and science. The main types of engineers are electrical, mechanical, chemical, computer and civil. However, there are many subcategories as well.

If each of the above fields, the main goals are for people to design and build things in an effort to solve problems and improve society. They must also keep in mind how feasible their designs will be and if they will be worth the cost of creating them. If you have a creative mind and are interested in an engineering career, the following jobs are the most popular today.

Electrical Engineers

The main tasks of electrical engineers are to design and create electrical products that will be useful for both residential communities and businesses. Some electrical engineers devote their entire career to just one product such as mobile phones or x-ray machines. The first thing that these professionals need to do is determine the purpose of the gadget they want to create.

Once they determine what the gadget is going to be used for, they will then make a blueprint of the gadget’s electrical wiring. After they come up with a plan for a workable wiring system, they will create a prototype of the gadget. They will then perform a series of tests on the prototype to ensure that it will work as it should. Finally, if the prototype works correctly, the engineer will then create the final product.

Mechanical Engineers

Mechanical engineers are involved in many tasks from evaluating mechanical designs and suggesting ideas for improvements to setting up new systems and monitoring their progress. They also spend some of their time perfecting designs that show some form of malfunction or weakness. While these are some of the basic duties of mechanical engineers, there are many more things that they may be responsible for.

Depending upon employers, these engineers may also need to possess knowledge of such things as materials handling, industrial fire protection, equipment sizing and designing, and product reliability testing. They may also need to have skills in engineering theories, computer-aided designing, mathematical modelling, communicating, training, and developing new technologies and materials.

Chemical Engineers

Chemical engineers use chemistry principles to manufacture many different chemical products and equipment for chemical plants. Using chemistry and physics principles, combined with engineering technology, they manufacture such products as cement, rubber, paper, plastic, detergents and gasoline. In the case of manufacturing equipment, they will also perform various tests to make sure the equipment works properly.

These professionals can be found working in many different industries including food, electronics, clothing, paper, healthcare and biotechnology. Some chemical engineers choose to specialize in a specific product or chemical process such as nanomaterials, oxidation or polymerization. They must know how these various processes affect the environment, and they must take safety precautions at all times.

Computer Engineers

Computer engineering jobs are quite popular today, and they offer excellent salaries as well. These professionals are valuable to most any business, large or small, especially businesses that deal with technology. Computer engineers are somewhat of a mix between computer scientists and electrical engineers. Some of their main duties are to design new computer systems and to maintain and improve these systems as necessary.

Many modern-day conveniences are the creations of computer engineers. Examples of some of the products that these engineers have helped to create and maintain are x-ray machines, digital media players, alarm systems and cell phones. Some computer engineers choose to specialize in such areas as computer systems, artificial intelligence, computer networks, computer architecture and integrated circuits.

Civil Engineers

Civil engineer’s duties are geared around the design, creation and maintenance of various public works systems. These professionals are often found working for such employers as government agencies, townships or private companies. Civil engineers must design structures that will meet safety codes and standards in the areas that they are building them.

Some of the structures that civil engineers may be involved in constructing are buildings, tunnels, freeway interchanges and bridges. They may also construct such things as sewage plants, levees, flood protection systems, seawalls and power plants. Civil engineers often choose to specialize in such areas as geotechnical, structural, environmental and hydraulics.

For those people, who like to solve challenging problems and create something better for society, a degree in engineering will be the perfect choice. There are many career options available for people with engineering degrees, and the above are just a few. From computer and electrical engineering to chemical, civil and mechanical engineering, there is sure to be an option that is perfect for you.
